Musical Studies Courses



Beginning Guitar nysmf block
nysmf music camp Designed for students with no prior experience in playing the guitar. Students will explore all the instrument’s basics, including left- and right-hand techniques, basic chords and scales, and hand positions.

Beginning Piano

 
  Recommended for those with no previous keyboard experience. This class emphasizes fundamental piano technique for instrumentalists who wish to learn to play the piano.

Music Theory & Ear Training I, II, III, IV  
 

Students learn all aspects of music, including sight singing in different clefs, singing and recognizing intervals and triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation skills. Students will be placed in classes appropriate to their level.


Music History  
  The study of jazz, rock and roll, musical theatre, opera, and more. Eras will range from antiquity to the 21st century.

Beginning Conducting

 
 

An introduction to the technique of leading larger ensembles. Basic beat patterns, dynamics, phrasing, tempo changes, cueing, cut-offs, changing beat units, interpretation, baton technique, and score-reading skills will be studied.


Beginning Composition  
 

New for 2013! Learn the fundamentals not only of the art and craft of composition, also learn to use the industry standard in notation software: Sibelius.
